Double Structures and Normal Bundle of Space Curves

Philippe Ellia

Dipartimento di Matematica via Machiavelli 35, 44100 Ferrara, Italy. E-mail: PhE{at}dns.unife.it

Received 15 June 1995. Revision received 1 May 1996.

It is shown that the general plane section of a double structure on an integral curve C{subseteq}P3 has a connected numerical character (that is, its Hilbert function is of decreasing type). The paper gives applications, particularly to the stability of the normal bundle of space curves.
