On Semifredholm Operators and the Calkin Algebra

We study the algebraic properties of the canonical images {pi}({Phi}+(E)) and {pi}({Phi}–(E)) of semiFredholm operators in the Calkin algebra C(E). The properties depend strongly on the underlying Banach space E; particular attention is paid to the case when E is an Lp-space.
